Air Quality in Tomball & Magnolia vs Houston and…. What can you do for your Indoor Air Quality?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says several U.S. cities have dangerously polluted air. When the American Lung Association’s State of the Air 2025 report came out in April and was re-published by the Health Effects Institute in October 2025, Houston was named among the most unsafe cities in which to live and breathe, with a grade of “F” for the number of unhealthy days. Magnolia, Tomball, and The Woodlands are considered Houston suburban cities.

What’s in Our Air?

If you live in a Houston suburb, you may be among the 7.8 million residents at-risk for air-pollution-related illnesses, including heart disease, lung issues, and even early death. The air pollutants to which Northwest Houston residents are exposed include:

  • Carbon monoxide – CO is discharged into the air when fuels burn without enough oxygen. Gas stoves, industrial processing, malfunctioning furnaces or water heaters, power plants, vehicle exhaust, and wildfires can release carbon monoxide.
  • Fine particulate matter – PM2.5 comes directly from nearby oil refineries and heavy vehicular traffic. It can be seen as fog or hazy sunlight.
  • Ground-level ozone – O3 is seen as smog, a secondary pollutant from cars, industries, and oil refineries.
  • Nitrogen dioxide – NO2 is mainly fossil-fuel-related air pollution caused by factories, gas stoves, oil refineries, power plants/power-generation, space heaters, vehicular exhaust, and wood-burning fireplaces. Crop-burning also releases this pollutant.
  • Particulate matter – PM10 are microscopic matter that is caused by burning fuels, construction, dust, factory emissions, fires, pollen, vehicle exhaust, and chemical reactions in the atmosphere.
  • Sulfur dioxide – SO2 is present in our air because of burning sulfur-containing fossil fuels by cars, industries, and refineries.

The Woodlands, Magnolia, Tomball Air Quality

Northwest Houston residents truly enjoy our wide range of house prices, easy access to downtown and airports, proximity to major job centers, superior schools, terrific shopping, and the variety of amenities offered by a comfortable, suburban lifestyle. Magnolia, The Woodlands (a census-designated Place), and Tomball are great places to call “home.” However, our air-quality index (AQI) ratings can be cause for concern because they can reach the maximum numbers allowed for people to go outside safely.

Magnolia Air Quality

If you heard a loud boom recently, it was the population explosion in Magnolia, TX. Its population increased by more than 147% between 2020-2024. As of 2025, the annual increase of new businesses, new projects, and new residents averages 8%. The Aggie Expressway (SH 249) and small-town ambience make Magnolia attractive to retirees and young families alike. (Read: How does Air Quality impact families?)

A December 2025 report showed Magnolia’s carbon monoxide, ground-level ozone, and sulfur dioxide levels were excellent, posing no air pollution risks. Most indoor air quality (IAQ) reports and air pollution level reports indicate Magnolia’s air quality is fair/medium and “generally acceptable.” But it was revealed that overall, Magnolia’s air had reached “a high level of pollution and is unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially its PM10 rating.

Additional air pollution levels of concern are NO2 and PM2.5, with both levels rated “fair.” Health complications can include asthma flareups, chest pain, coughing, chronic respiratory or bronchial disease, coughing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, eye and throat irritation, headaches, and heart disease.

The Woodlands Air Quality

Every year, The Woodlands shows a strong economy and consistent (about 1.7%) population growth. It attracts affluent companies and major corporations; its educated, professional, and rental population are also strong as its demographics become more diverse. It is considered one of Texas’ real estate luxury marketing sites.

The air quality in The Woodlands is acceptable and receives a moderate grade. Annually, several days (63 in 2024) in The Woodlands see unhealthy air quality due to the heat, excessive traffic, and refineries. Also, high-pressure weather systems can cause temperature inversions in the area, which trap air pollutants and position them closer to the ground. On December 12, 2025, AccuWeather reported the air reached a dangerous level of pollution.

CO, ground-level ozone, and SO2 usually pose little to no threat. The Woodlands’ primary air pollutant is PM10. These particulate pollutants are deposited in your body’s airways, aggravating asthma and causing coughing, difficulty breathing, and eye/throat irritation. They can also lead to serious health issues. “Fair” grades were given to airborne levels of NO2 and PM2.5.

Tomball Air Quality

This city boasts small-town charm and big-city economic growth, but its main appeal may be the Tomball Independent School District’s public education. Tomball ISD is an award-winning destination district, attracting families from throughout the state. With its economy, quality of life, and advanced accessibility to major highways like SH-249 and the Grand Parkway (Hwy 99), Tomball’s population is predicted to increase from 13,000 to 20,000 by 2030.

Tomball’s December 2025 air pollution report card showed “A” grades for carbon monoxide, ground-level ozone, and sulfur dioxide levels. In general, Tomball received a moderate-to-good air quality rating, which is respectable for the Houston area.

PM10 is the air-pollution culprit in Tomball, TX and helped trigger high-level-of-pollution warnings that the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups in December 2025. Rated “fair,” but still air pollution levels of concern are NO2 and PM2.5.

How Can You Control Indoor Air Quality

There are several ways to improve our outdoor air quality. Supporting environmental safety and reducing our carbon footprints are becoming more than catchphrases; they are becoming a way of life. But making a difference that will immediately improve the air you breathe is difficult, unless it’s inside your home or office.

You can control your indoor air quality.

Country Air only installs AMBlue II ductwork in Northwest Houston homes and offices to reduce the hazards of our high humidity and improve IAQ. But you may need more. Ask us about our affordable solutions to IAQ, including media filters.

Aerus Air Scrubber (using ActivePure TechnologyTM) is a cost-friendly way to reduce biological contaminants and improve indoor air while reducing odors. Solaris® is our whole-house air purification system that integrates with HVAC advanced filtration and smart monitoring. Antimicrobial fogging is often recommended after an air duct inspection or alongside a duct cleaning. It can sterilize your air system, making IAQ healthier and odor-free.

Indoor Air Quality FAQs

Two of the questions we receive about IAQ are:

Q: Is there anything that will eliminate the dust in my house? It’s so heavy!

A: All our IAQ treatments and equipment will reduce the dust problem in your home, but no… There’s just no way to eliminate the construction and development dust we now see in Magnolia, The Woodlands, and Tomball communities.

We Recommend:

  • Choose low-volatile organic compounds (VOC) cleaning solutions, paints, etc.
  • Decluttering
  • Enforcing a no-shoes policy indoors
  • Frequent vacuuming
  • Grooming pets outdoors
  • Having ducts professionally cleaned and sealed
  • HVAC filter upgrades
  • Limiting rugs/carpeting (consider hard flooring) and heavy drapes
  • Open windows on cool, low-pollution days
  • Regular damp-dusting and housecleaning

What are VOCs?
VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds which are (usually) human-made formulas that have high vapor pressure and low water solubility. These chemicals are dangerous for IAQ. Avoid harsh chemicals and look for:

  • Cleaners with Green Seal certification and low VOCs (<10%), avoiding petroleum- and bleach-based solutions
  • Paints with Green Seal/Greenguard certification and low VOCs: (<50g/L flat; <100g/L non-flat)
